Hindu calendar follows the cycles of the Moon, and therefore there are around 29.5 days in a month. While there are 30 or 31 days in a Solar month. Hence, there is a difference of 11 days every year in both these calendars (Lunar and Solar) and this difference comes to 29 or 30 days in every 3 years, and becomes a whole month. To keep the lunar and solar calendars aligned, an extra month is added every three years. This extra month is known as Purushottam Maas since the main deity of this month is Lord Vishnu, who is also known as Lord Purushottam. This month is also known as Adhik Maas or Mal Maas.
In 2023, the Purushottam month is starting from Tuesday, 18th of July and ends on Wednesday, 16th of August, which falls in the month of Shravan. Therefore it is also called Shravan Purushottam Maas or Shravan Adhik Maas this year. Purushottam Month is considered as a Holy month, and the benefits of this month are innumerable.
The Puranas also sing high praises about Adhik Maas and indicate puja, during this month. Selfless actions, without any expectations of results are to be performed during Purushottam Maas. It is believed that a person can be confer with all the necessities of the life, as well as after leaving this world, he will be taken to the abode of Lord Krishna. The recitation of Srimad Bhagwat Purana and Bhagavad Gita during Adhik month is considered auspicious. Even the recitation of Lord Vishnu Sahastranaam Path during this month is considered highly beneficial.
Lord Shiva is one of the Deity in the Hindu trilogy, along with Lord Brahma and Vishnu. He is the destroyer of all Evil, and the one who bestows the greatest blessings when pleased. The entire month of Shravan ( Saawan ) is dedicated to Lord Shiva & especially the Mondays that fall during this month are considered most auspicious days for offering prayers to Lord Shiva and getting his blessings for the entire coming year. By performing Purushottam Maas Shravan Somvar Puja, a person gets good health, wealth and happiness. He is protected from all kinds of Evil effects and Enemies.
Purushottam Maas Katha has been described in the Puranas. The study of the idea and story of Purushottam month tells us why this month is so special in itself. Purushottam Maas is called Mal Maas. It remained so for a long time. Being a Mal Maas, this month had no importance, no rights and so no one praised it.
Mal Maas was very worried about this situation. Due to his name, he was always subjected to ridicule. He was not governed by any specific Lord and hence his existence was ignored. However actually without Mala Maas, it would not be possible to calculate a year correctly. Without Mala Maas, the computation of time would be chaotic.
Unhappy with his disregard of this kind, Mala Maas gets irritated and seeks shelter under Shri Hari. Malmas shares his miser with Lord Vishnu. He expresses the pain he feels at being considered redundant. He also tells Lord Vishnu that he is condemned as he does not have a Lord governing him. Seeing Mal Maas saddened by all this, Shri Vishnu assures him that no one will condemn him from now on.
Bhaktavatsal Srivishnu decided to give Mal Maas a place in his world. He granted a boon to Mal Maas as per which he himself will be the Lord of Mal Maas. Mal Maas will have Lord Vishnu’s quality within him. Karunasindhu beautified Mala Maas with all his divine qualities. He named Mal Maas by his own name Purushottam and declared that from then on Mal Maas will be known by the name Purushottam only and will attain fame through this name. According to the boon given by God, Mal Maas started being called Purushottam month. The owner of this month is Shri Vishnu, so chanting Lord Vishnu’s name and worshiping Lord Vishnu at this time is considered very good.
