Makar Sankranti has immense significance in Hinduism. Here are twelve Sankranti according to Hindu Calander, out of which Makar Sankranti holds utmost significance. Makar Sankranti is the transition of the sun towards northern hemisphere and moves away from Tropic of Capricorn. This period of six months is called Uttarayanam. Uttar means North and ayan means Movement. The rest of six months is called Dakhinayanam, which means movement of the sun towards the south. This is the best time to take bath, offer prayers to the sun, meditate on what bothered mind and soul in the past six months. The New crop grows and harvesting happens during this period. People eat khichidi made up of urad dal and moong dal.Makar Sankranti is called Pongal. Sun God is worshipped and Gayatri mantra is chanted.
